When the dust finally clears and the stench of scandal and coverup drifts away, Hockey Canada needs to be replaced. Destroyed really.
For anyone who loves hockey, has participated in hockey at whatever level, has watched hockey, and has enjoyed hockey, the past few weeks have been more than unsettling. The reporting done, mostly by Rick Westhead of TSN, Ken Campbell of Hockey Unfiltered, Katie Strang and her team at The Athletic, and Global Television has changed the landscape of the sport in the country. Advertising Sponsors have fled Hockey Canada with a speed never seen before.
Ever since this story broke a number of weeks ago, I can’t help but think of how much of life has been spent in and around minor hockey. That’s part of the Hockey Canada umbrella: A small part that pays large fees so in this case, a special fund can be utilized if needed to pay out legal claims. Sport has that power at every level from house league to the NHL. I wouldn’t trade in one hour of the many I put in over my adult years. But it hurts now – and I suspect others feel the same – that those registration fees paid year after year, wound up as part of a $15 million slush fund.
This is a particularly confusing and confounding time for TSN, the network partner of Hockey Canada. TSN pays Hockey Canada $15 million a year to televise its events. Westhead is TSN’s investigative reporter. The more Westhead has uncovered on Hockey Canada, the worse business it is for the organization and the network. Just how much financial damage has been done in the name of uncovering the scandal is yet to be determined.
