What does it say about the way that Hockey Canada treats the issue of sexual violence?
Right away, there was the tremendous whiff of a coverup: Why would Hockey Canada offer such a quick payout, by its own admission liquidating assets to do so, when it has liability insurance for such a thing? Why not let the legal process unfold, at least a little? The insurance company has lawyers, after all. That’s what you pay them for.
That only seems more implausible with every turn of the story. On Tuesday a report in The Globe and Mail detailed the existence of an internal investment fund on the company’s books that could be used to, for example, settle sexual-assault claims against players and staff.
All of it underscores the most troubling aspect of the story, which is that Hockey Canada officials were concerned enough about what happened on that night in 2018 to contact police — only after they had contacted their insurers for a sounding out — and to initiate an outside investigation, but then were fine letting the whole matter drop when it didn’t go anywhere.
