SIMMONS: Gittens Jr. is going to Grey Cup Week – Will the Argos go with him? Via simmonssteve

Gittens will head West as the Eastern representative as the best Canadian player. He will take on the remarkable quarterback, Nathan Rourke, in a battle for top Canadian that is worthy of some kind of debate. Gittens Jr. will be at awards night but he wants the Argos along with him and in order to do they have is beat the Montreal Alouettes Sunday at BMO Field.

But what he’s doing right now has rarely been done in Argo history. If Rourke and the B.C. Lions win on Sunday they’ll become the first Canadian team to have a Canadian starting at quarterback in a Grey Cup game since Jackson’s last CFL game in 1969. Should Gittens Jr. be voted Top Canadian, he would become just the second Argo ever to be so honoured.

By 20, Gittens Jr. was already drafted by the Argos, by 21 he was on the roster. Now at the grand old age of 25 – and remember, there was no CFL in 2020 because of the pandemic — the kid is putting up the kind of numbers Canadians have rarely put up in Double Blue. The greatest Argo receivers of all-time — Terry Greer, Mookie Mitchell, Darrell K. Smith, S.J. Green, and even the running backs, Pinball Clemons and Dick Shatto, were all Americans. Gittens Jr. is what they call a ratio buster. He takes a Canadian place in your lineup performing the way an American might.
