September has been declared deaf awareness month.
The introduction of South African Sign Language to hearing learners starting from Grade 5 plays a crucial role in fostering inclusivity, and ensuring that sign language becomes an integral part of building a more inclusive society.
That’s according to the education department in Gauteng, which hosted a Sign Language and Music Enhancement Mini Festival in Pretoria. The programme, which began five years ago, offers a basic sign language course to hearing learners to promote a mutual understanding between hearing and deaf communities. The department’s Deshni Naidu says this has also created job opportunities for the deaf, as facilitators are former learners.
“Instead of them having to be very reliant on disability grants, this program also offers them a chance to be employed. So, one of the requirements of this program is that when hearing learners are being taught the language, it must be done by a deaf person, in that way giving employment opportunities to the deaf community.
