A shutdown has disrupted schools and businesses in Bethal area in the Govern Mbeki Local Municiplaty
A shutdown has disrupted teaching and learning, businesses and traffic flow on the N17 road in the Bethal area in the Govern Mbeki Local Municipality, Mpumalanga.
Residents are protesting over the disruption of electricity and water supply. They say they have been without water for over a month. A community member Jabulani Masilela says the municipality does not give any notices before sending its people to cut off electricity supply. Masilela says, “They just come in and cut off the electricity and give you a notice that says today they are cutting off your electricity service.”
“There’s this system that the municipality is implementing, if you are not the owner of that household, you are not able to pay or to buy electricity. Many people in the location are staying in their homes whereby their parents passed away a long time ago and the houses are registered under their names.
