A collaborative film project about brain injury recovery demonstrates that progress can be made if people are willing to work hard and shoot for the stars. | SaltWire

A documentary by Kimberly Smith of Creative Action Digital Video in Canning called “Severe Brain Injury Recovery: Shooting for the Stars” features brain injury survivors Kelly LeBlanc, Robert Hessian, and Doug Rafuse, left to right on screen. KIRK STARRATTCANNING, N.S. — A collaborative film project about brain injury recovery demonstrates that progress can be made if people are willing to work hard and shoot for the stars.

Hessian said he came to the point of realizing that all the work he was doing was just to be able to walk around town and “live a normal everyday person’s life.”Hessian said he was 18 when he suffered his injury. He said he kept doing what he was doing, just in a different way.“I never thought ‘oh, I’m behind an eight ball’ or anything like that… that was just something that happened, and I just kept living,” Hessian said.

He said, “we are in a bit of an evolution” when it comes to brain injury recovery. If they can set positive examples of people who have benefited in an independent living environment, that may one day become the norm. “Our bodies and our brain have a remarkable capacity to heal, and what enables that is movement,” Smith said. “I think I learned the profound importance of moving your body, no matter what.”

He said their story is inspiring. Smith sees it as proof that if you work hard every day, you get better health outcomes than if you don’t, and this is especially true for people who have suffered brain injuries.
