Former high school teacher Noel Strapp, who has served 50 days of his four-year jail sentence for sexually assaulting and exploiting a student, has been released from custody on bail pending the appeal of his conviction. From Tara_Bradbury SaltWire

JOHN'S, N.L. — Noel Strapp has been released from custody on bail pending the appeal of his conviction for sexually assaulting and exploiting a student while he was a high school teacher.

Strapp’s grounds of appeal focus on credibility issues at trial and include allegations that the trial judge misapprehended the evidence of Strapp’s ex-wife, failed to address other evidence and deemed certain things insignificant that were in fact important to the case. Patey compared Strapp’s situation to that of another convicted sexual offender: Royal Newfoundland Constabulary officer Doug Snelgrove, who was released on bail in December pending an appeal of his conviction and four-year prison sentence for sexually assaulting a woman while he was on duty in 2014. Patey argued the matters are similar enough to warrant the same bail application result.

Steeves submitted Strapp’s appeal arguments are weak and argued public trust in the justice system would suffer if he were released. Strapp was found guilty in February after a provincial court trial of sexually assaulting and exploiting a former student, now in her early 20s, beginning when she was in Grade 11 and continuing until she was in university. She was a member of sports teams Strapp was coaching at school when they began a sexual relationship and she and Strapp had shared texts and private sexual exchanges on SnapChat, where content is permanently deleted.

It’s particularly egregious, the trial judge said, that Strapp had been aware the girl was experiencing personal challenges; he used them to his advantage to develop an inappropriate relationship with her.
