Senate could launch special committee to investigate issues in SNC-Lavalin scandal

OTTAWA — Even as Liberals in the House of Commons try to move past allegations senior government officials tried to interfere in the criminal prosecution of SNC-Lavalin, a more thorough public airing of the scandal is looming in the Senate.

“Colleagues, the Senate must address the challenge of the circumstances that have arisen. It must not shirk at this challenge, it must not allow itself to be paralyzed by fear of controversy or failure,” Pratte said on the Senate floor Thursday.

Although the ethics commissioner is still conducting an investigation over whether conflict-of-interest rules were broken in the case, Liberals this week expressed hope the matter had been put to bed.For weeks, senators had been debating a Conservative Party motion that asked for Wilson-Raybould, Butts, the prime minister himself and a host of others to appear before the Senate’s legal committee. Independent senators, including the leader of the Independent Senators Group, Sen.

“Our objective as an independent Senate should be neither to prolong nor to stifle the scandal but to provide a thorough review of the facts and their possible interpretations,” he said. “I would like to be able to say that we were there, we studied the issue in depth, with objectivity and rigour, and we above all proposed solutions. I would like to be able to say this is today’s independent Senate.
