While at SDCC2023, Screen Rant spoke with Mattel and WWE designers about the toy company's wrestling line and JurassicPark anniversary celebrations:
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Mattel has brought some of the biggest franchises and brands in pop culture into fans' homes with products like Jurassic Park, Disney, and WWE. The toy company is one of the largest toy makers in the world, second only to Lego, and has been at the forefront with not only action figures but Mattel originals like Barbie, Hot Wheels, and more.
I love that you brought up the fans because that's something I wanted to talk to you guys about because I feel like out of any other toy brand, you guys listen to the fans the most and I feel like you guys really deliver on what we want to see as fans. Now, another two-pack, I saw Eric Bischoff and Rowdy Roddy Piper. Talk to me, chat me up about that.
Steven Ozer: Yeah, WWE are such fantastic partners with us and they're such a rich history of pop culture crossover superstars with the company. So we of course have our wishlists of who we want to include in the line, and we work with these great partners who try to make this become a reality. And they're able to provide me with the reference photos to make sure that we're not just doing some, not just any Samoan tribal pattern, but we're doing his Samoan tribal pattern to, because we want to make sure that when you look at it and you're looking at a miniature version of the Usos.
Bill Miekina: Next year will be the 40th anniversary of the birth of Hulkamania and WWE, and it just seemed like we should celebrate this. This is a big deal. This is basically why a lot of people got into wrestling by watching Hulk Hogan and WWE back in the day. That was one of the reasons...
Steven Ozer: We do everyone's impressions all the time. Maybe especially me, maybe too much, but I think the team all has so much fun with what we do because the passion is there. Sometimes the references go over some of the younger people on the team's heads, but we have a good time making these figures.
I don't think there's a wrestling line better than Ultimate Line. It's just so beautiful, with so many options and the articulation is incredible. What's one of the figures that isn't in the line that you guys are personally hoping to see? Bill Miekina: For me, I look at it as what's the best way to execute this? If it's something that has a smooth surface that you can pose like a T-shirt or just Gunther's jacket. The surface on that is smooth. There's not a lot of surface detail. It's something that you can execute in a soft good. That's when soft goods, if you have something like Brett Hart's jacket.
