Scottish independence support will rise on back of Tory spending cuts, claim Greens
The huge cuts to public spending expected to be announced by Jeremy Hunt will help drive up support for independence, the Scottish Greens have claimed.
Hunt has spent weeks warning the public to expect a raft of tax rises and spending cuts as the UK Government tries to restore the country's economic credibility following the disastrous mini-budget announced by Liz Truss's short-lived premiership. Rishi Sunak earlier warned it would require "difficult decisions" to bring inflation back to manageable levels. But the Scottish Greens argued it was "catastrophic incompetence" that caused many of the fiscal pressures facing the country."When faced with the chaos, cruelty and catastrophic incompetence of a Tory government we did not vote for, independence is more urgent and vital than ever.
"This is a fundamental question of democracy. Scotland voted for none of this and yet our communities will be made to pay the price. Perhaps more than anything else, it illustrates in the starkest terms exactly why we need the powers of a normal independent nation."
