World No.1 Scottie Scheffler was seen holding back the tears after he and Brooks Koepka were subjected to a record Ryder Cup foursomes defeat on another painful morning for the American team.

They needed only 11 holes over 2 hours and 20 minutes to beat Scheffler and five-time major champion Brooks Koepka. The well fancied American now face an almost impossible task to retain the trophy they won so convincingly at Whistling Straights just two years ago but the suggestion that the competition doesn’t mean as much to their players was blown out of the water judging by Scheffler’s post match reaction.With his head in his hands sat next to his wife, the 27-year-old appeared inconsolable as he digested the significance of another seismic blow to America’s hopes.

‘We tried to not give them anything. We played really solid and obviously didn’t meet a sharp Scottie and Brooks but we played some really nice golf today
