The opening matchup with Scheffler and Rahm will feature the No. 1 and No. 3-ranked players in the world and the past two Masters champions.
The afternoon session will present four-ball matches between pairings announced by each captain after the morning session concludes. It comes as a bit of a surprise that Johnson is leaning on newcomers early in often in a pressure-packed road environment. Three of the first four Americans on the tee will be Ryder Cup rookies — Burns, Homa and Harman.
While leaning on those first-timers, Johnson is also sitting Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas. The two produced three of the Americans’ 10 1/2 points at at Le Golf National in 2018, the last Ryder Cup played in Europe. — On the European side, Donald is front-loading the day with his heaviest hitters. His top three options — Rahm, Hovland and McIlroy — will all see the course in the morning and could very well be on their way to playing all five matches of the week.
The Europeans fell behind 3-1 out of the gates in the morning foursomes two years ago at Whistling Straits and never recovered. The U.S. led 6-2 by the end of the day and rolled to a 19-9 win. —
