McGregor passed Brown in the Scotland caps stakes last week and his old comrade reckons he has become a leader for club and country.
Shouldering a sky high expectation level and using it to fly when it would bury others. It’s a feeling Scott Brown knows so well having embraced the weight of the Celtic armband for 11 of his 14 trophy-laden seasons in the Hoops.
Only last week Billy Gilmour described McGregor - who surpassed Brown’s 55 caps against Spain - as the driving force in the Scotland engine room which is now heading all the way to Germany 2024. And ahead of Tuesday's friendly clash with France, Brown was in full agreement. He said: “Callum’s always had that in his locker and he’s grown into it over the years.
McGregor might still be a good bit off matching Brown’s 619 appearances for Celtic. But it’s almost gone unnoticed that in Seville he overtook his old comrade in the international arena as he won his 56th cap. “He’s always worried about what’s next, and how he’s going to get better and what he can do to get better. I think that’s the way you need to be these days as well. Don’t get me wrong there are probably a few more games now than when we played and they have the Nations League as well, getting through that helps Scotland, which is huge.
Along with Darren Fletcher, James McFadden and other Tartan Army heroes he was part of the nearly generation caught in the middle of a 23-year spell on the periphery of major competitions. There’s not a hint of envy in the 38-year-old’s eyes though when he’s asked how special the current group of players are that have secured their spot in Germany with two games to spare.
