Billy McNeill eyed an English double but was turned away in his bid to keep up with their rivals across the city.
Andy Walker has revealed that Rangers icon Paul Gascoigne could have been a CELTIC star long before he signed up at Ibrox.
“He told me that, in the summer of 1988, he’d informed the directors that he wanted to sign two players – Peter Beardsley from Liverpool and Paul Gascoigne from Newcastle. Bear in mind that Rangers had been able to sign up half of the England team then because English clubs were banned from playing in Europe at the time.
The former Parkhead board paid a heavy cost for failing to back the club’s greatest skipper in the dugout. Following Graeme Souness’ arrival at Ibrox as player/manager in 1986 until the turn of the century, rivals Rangers won 12 out of 14 league titles. Ally McCoist and Michael Beale’s inexperience in management soon told, as was the case with interim boss Graeme Murty. Another rookie, Steven Gerrard, stopped Celtic’s ten-in-a-row bid in 2021 but failed to win any of the other eight domestic trophies available to him, while Mark Warburton had never managed a top-flight club until he arrived in Glasgow.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst took the club to a Europa League Final, won the Scottish Cup and led them into the money-spinning Champions League group stage. But he didn’t receive the backing he expected in the summer 2022 transfer window and was soon sacked for not catching Celtic.
