Diversion from prosecution is supposed to help prosecutors deal with low-level offences to give suspected offenders an alternative to prosecution. However reports suggest rape suspects have been able to avoid a trial and possible criminal conviction

Ms Bain said:"Sexual offences are among the most difficult cases prosecutors deal with. I am acutely aware of the trauma experienced by victims and their loved ones.

"Diversion can be an appropriate intervention to prevent perpetrators reoffending which, in turn, builds towards a safer society for all.
