Fire is about 5.6 kilometres from Sayward, no evacuation alerts are imminent.

An out-of-control wildfire west of Sayward on the north Island was holding steady at about 208 hectares on Saturday after reaching that size on Friday evening.

It had been at 90 ha earlier in the week, and was measured at 15 ha when it was first reported Monday afternoon. The increased size was largely due to being able to get a more accurate look at the blaze due to clearing smoke, rather than the result of it spreading, said Coastal Fire Centre information officer Kimberly Kelly.

The fire is still about 5.6 kilometres west of Sayward, home to about 350 people, and no evacuation alerts are imminent, she said.“It’s been reported that all containment lines are holding,” Kelly said. The fire is believed to be human-caused and is the biggest on Vancouver Island so far this fire season, which began April 1, and is the lone wildfire currently burning on the Island.
