Much of the jump in size since Monday is due to smoke clearing and allowing for a more accurate look at the fire’s perimeter, says the Coastal Fire Centre
An out-of-control wildfire west of Sayward is now estimated to be 160 hectares, up from 90 early this week, but the Coastal Fire Centre says the north Island community is still not in immediate danger from the blaze.
Much of the jump in size is due to smoke clearing and allowing for a more accurate look at the fire’s perimeter, said Coastal Fire Centre information officer Jeanne Larsen. “At this point there is no threat to Sayward village,” she said. “There is no threat to any homes, there are no evacuation orders or alerts, nor do we anticipate any.”
The fire remains about 5.6 kilometres from Sayward, which has a population of about 350. Another 600 to 900 live in the Sayward Valley.Sayward is about 75 kilometres north of Campbell River.
