Residents of northern First Nations communities being evacuated to Timmins, other northern cities. Sault doesn’t normally have capacity

Residents of remote northern communities affected by flooding are being evacuated to safer places, but Sault Ste. Marie is not on the primary list of communities receiving them.

“The province has its own process of how they do it. They have a list of some of their preferred, more accessible communities that they will go to first when it comes to evacuations,” said Lauren Perry, City of Sault Ste. Marie emergency management coordinator. “There are a number of communities that they go to that have more experience, more resources and more space. Sault Ste. Marie often doesn’t have the hotel capacity which is why we rarely manage to fill that role. We often run at full capacity for hotels in Sault Ste. Marie,” Perry told SooToday.

The last time the Sault took in evacuees was during the forest fire season of 2021, accommodating residents of North Spirit Lake First Nation at the Water Tower Inn.475 people from Kashechewan First Nation were expected to be in Timmins by the end of this week due to flooding. In Timmins, they will be staying at the Ramada Inn and Microtel Inn and Suites.
