More than 2 500 police trainees have been evacuated following a gas pipeline explosion near the South African Police Service Training Academy in Pretoria on Wednesday afternoon.The cause of the fire is still unknown.

National Police Spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe says the evacuation is a precautionary measure. A venue operational centre comprising various experts has been established under the command of the Deputy National Commissioner of Policing, General Tebello Mosikili.“The decision to evacuate the trainees, SAPS trainers and members from various specialised units including the Nat joints coordination centre was taken following advice and consultation from experts.
