Sifiso Khoza from the South African National Blood Service says there is less than a day-and-a-half's worth of stock in the province."We need five day's worth of stock in order to be able to supply all the blood banks and hospitals in the eight provinces that we operate in. We are in a very dire situation."Khoza says they need 3 500 units a day to allocate to several medical needs.

"Most of the blood goes to mothers giving birth and cancer patients who need chemo on a weekly basis and premature babies."Since we are not getting the number of units, we need on a daily basis - if people are involved in an accident and they need blood in an emergency situation, it just compounds the problem because we have to take whatever units are available in order to assist them.
