Bucking a trend seen in many major U.S. cities, San Antonio kept on growing during the coronavirus pandemic, according to new data from the Census Bureau.

The city’s population growth — which extended throughout the Hill Country and along the Interstate 35 corridor — has long-term ramifications for the area’s affordability, infrastructure and economy.

San Antonio’s growth from 2020 to 2022 mirrored the 10 years prior to the pandemic, which brought steady population increases. From 2010 to 2020, San Antonio’s population increased by 8.4 percent, or about 112,000 people, rising from 1.33 million to 1.44 million, according to Census Bureau data. Of the four Texas cities that are among the 10 most populous in the country, three of them — San Antonio, Austin and Houston — did not lose residents.
