The demolition diversion program will become a permanent part of the city budget over the next four years thanks to funding from the affordable housing bond voters approved in 2022.
San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg, left, tours Olga Escobedo’s home Friday, May 19, 2023. Escobedo’s home was the first single-family home selected for the Operation Rebuild Program, a demolition diversion pilot program launched in 2022 to invest in low-income homes at-risk of demolition. The formerly vacant house has been repainted with a fresh coat of bright blue paint. It’s been completely renovated and now has central air and heat.
Escobedo will move back into the Southwest Side home once owned by her parents next month. It’s a place she hasn’t lived in for more than four years since it fell into disrepair and was no longer safe to occupy, leading her to move in with a son and then stay with a daughter.
