The San Antonio Police Department is receiving a $6.25 million grant to add 50 more officers to the force.
Regardless of the grant, S.A.P.D. will be opening 117 patrol officer positions over the next year but the additional funding will allow the process to be expedited.
Congressman Gonzales says San Antonio is one of four cities that was granted 50 additional officers through the COP Grant program. “All the talk is that the hundred and so officers that we are going to bring on will go directly to patrol, these 50 will be included in that hundred,” said San Antonio Police Chief William McManus.
“The adapted budget had the schedule for the five classes, had we not received the grant, we were going to slide all those classes back to match the dollars we had but we’re not going to have to do that so we will be able to add those classes and start them sooner,” said Walsh.
