South Africa has reaffirmed its longstanding commitment to the full, effective and accelerated implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform of Action.
Minister Chikunga has also reflected on the country’s experience in implementing the critical areas of the platform, which is the focus of this year’s Commission. “ From the onset, we reaffirm our longstanding commitment to the full, effective, and accelerated implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and the outcome documents of the twenty-third special session of the General Assembly. We recognise these as transformative blueprints not only for advancing women’s rights and opportunities but also as pathways to a future that will be just, equitable, sustainable, and collectively prosperous.
But there has also been some positive momentum. As Chikunga explains, “Gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls are constitutional imperatives enshrined is Section 9 of the Constitution. Our Bill of Rights embraces a restorative approach to gender equality. With regard to representation in decision and law-making structures, South African women make up 43.
