COSATU warns that UIF’s outdated systems enable fraud and delays, calling for urgent modernization.

Cosatu has raised concerns over the Unemployment Insurance Fund’s weak internal controls after the Special Investigating Unit revealed that UIF paid out approximately R57 billion in fraudulent claims to government employees during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The SIU updated Parliament on its ongoing investigations into the Employment and Labour Department, UIF, and TERS. Cosatu Parliamentary Coordinator, Matthew Parks, emphasized the urgent need for UIF modernization, stating that outdated systems enable corruption and inefficiency. “The UIF systems are highly inefficient, creating opportunities for fraud both internally and externally. Some businesses submit claims on behalf of workers, but never transfer the funds to them. Additionally, these outdated systems make it difficult for workers to access their benefits and for employers to register employees,” said Parks.
