Free-agent signing says when you have the Leafs’ core, “you have a chance to win a Cup every year.”
“I wanted to go to contender and I think Toronto’s a contender,” the 36-year-old fourth-liner said Sunday. “I was going to re-sign in Minnesota unless a contender came along. I’m 36. I don’t have a Cup yet. I really want to win. That’s really the only thing on my mind right now.
Reaves signed a three-year deal with a cap hit of $1.35 million a year. He’s not with the Leafs because he can score; he is here to fight, to hit, to make life uncomfortable for the opposition, and to brighten up a Leafs room that has a reputation for being too quiet, too stoic. “I don’t play a lot of minutes. I don’t score a ton of goals. So what I do as a physical player are the fighting, making sure guys feel safe on the ice and, you know, chirping and getting guys space. But, off the ice, I take that very seriously. I like to plan the parties. I like getting the boys together. I like getting together on the road. I tend to drag everybody . I try to make sure everybody’s there because that’s really important.
