NHL free agency opened at noon on Saturday and teams were quick to sign players — including some former Leafs — to deals.
, ranked eighth in career penalty minutes among active NHLers, signed a three-year deal worth $1.3 million per season with Toronto, which will become the sixth team of the 36-year-old’s career.
All three years are guaranteed and will count against the cap, even if Reaves retires, because he’s over 35. He had five goals and 10 assists last year with 43 penalty minutes, bringing his career total PIMs to 1,023. The signing of Reaves is sure to be a talking point. His best days as a player are behind him after 828 career regular-season and 108 career playoff games. He was frequently scratched as a Ranger last year before regaining a regular-fourth line role in Minnesota. But he’s also tough as nails, bringing an element the Leafs dearly lack. And he’s a very big presence in the room — a character guy, in the parlance of hockey.
