Royal AM, a financially struggling football club, has once again faced criticism after the Premier Soccer League ( PSL ) suspended its upcoming league and cup matches. The suspension stems from the club's inability to meet its financial obligations. Owner Shauwn Mkhize is reportedly under investigation by the South African Revenue Service ( SARS ) for an outstanding debt of R40 million. Adding to the club's woes, Royal AM is currently under a FIFA-imposed transfer ban .
The match against Orlando Pirates, initially scheduled for Thursday, January 23, 2025, was canceled despite assurances from the club. This marks the club's second consecutive match cancellation, following their 3-1 loss to TS Galaxy on December 29, 2024.The PSL's Executive Committee (ExCo) made the decision after being informed on January 17, 2025, that a joint letter of comfort confirming the resolution of the club's financial issues would be provided. However, this letter was never forthcoming. ExCo, left with no alternative, canceled the Royal AM vs. Orlando Pirates fixture at Harry Gwala Stadium and suspended all other Royal AM matches until further notice. A meeting is scheduled for Friday, January 24, 2025, at 11 am to allow Royal AM to present its case.The 2024/2025 season has been particularly challenging for Royal AM, who currently occupy second-last place on the PSL log, just a point ahead of bottom-placed Magesi FC. Social media has erupted with fan reactions, calling for severe penalties against Royal AM and urging Mkhize to sell the club. Some fans suggest awarding points to rival teams affected by Royal AM's cancellations, while others advocate for a stricter approach to ensure the integrity of the league.
