No. 4 Dons beat No. 3 Highlanders in key early season matchup
Reigning Division 1-AA state champion Cathedral Catholic was coming off the worst loss in the program’s storied 64-year history, a 63-7 thrashing by Chandler . The week before, the Dons were drubbed by Corona Centennial 42-7.
Cathedral head coach Sean Doyle pointed out the quality of the competition. Chandler is ranked eighth in the nation, Centennial 15season coaching Cathedral. The Dons , ranked fourth in San Diego, rewarded their head coach’s faith, upsetting the third-ranked Highlanders 14-13 at Jim Arnaiz Field in a non-league game. Helix fell to 3-1.With 10 new starters on offense, including an entirely new offensive line, Doyle knew his defense would have to carry the team early.
But Cathedral’s secondary stayed glued to Helix’s pass catchers as Jessee completed only 10 of 26 passes for 104 yards with no TDs. Fittingly, the defense sealed the win, Sean Kagen intercepting a pass near midfield with less than 20 seconds to play. “There was never a doubt in our ability,” said Kagen. “I have full trust in every single dude on our team to do their job.”Cathedral QB Jack Stevens completed seven of nine passes for 108 yards, one TD and one interception.Top 10 FaredCarlsbad stopped El Camino at its 23 and 21 on a pair of fourth-quarter defensive stands in the Avocado League opener. LB Thomas Weirich had two sacks and an interception for the Lancers while Ben Harris and Justin Johnson also had interceptions.
