Has “a combination of Chinese demand and increased pipeline space led to a massive increase in the export of crude oil out of the Port of Vancouver last year” as reported in The Vancouver Sun on March 24?Let’s look at the facts.

Asian demand for Alberta’s crude in 2018 was equivalent to about 20,000 barrels a day. In mathematical terms the increase may be infinite — as any increase from zero is — but in terms of what matters, Asian demand last year is more appropriately described as minuscule, representing 0.006 per cent of the crude Canada exported in 2018.

Birn says, “The world is hunting for heavy barrels and Canada has them. It’s just about being able to access it. If they can get it to the Westridge terminal it will go.” Birn’s statement makes no sense when significant guaranteed dock capacity is not being used. Let’s get real about the compromised financial viability and disappearing need for Trans Mountain’s expansion. For political reasons, Ottawa rushed in to buy a commercially hamstrung project, saddling taxpayers with billions in subsidies in a fruitless attempt to try to get this white elephant to fly.
