Road Accident Fund claim payouts increase to over R45 billion for the past financial year

Collins Letsoalo, RAF chief executive officer, has lamented that the high rate of motor vehicle accidents continued to be a significant area of concern and the largest cost driver for the RAF.has paid R45.69 billion in road accident claims in the past financial year, a 17% increase from the R39.16 billion payout figure in the 2019/20 financial year.

However, the entity noted in its annual report that in real terms, this represented a decrease, as the fund did not receive any fuel levy increases over the past two years, while inflation averaged 6.9%.General damages claims accounted for R11 billion of the total payout, with loss of support accounting for R2.5 billion, R22.2 billion for loss of earnings and R51 million for funeral costs.

He adds a key strategic initiative will be the inclusion of a pre-claims phase as part of our claims management value chain, saying this addresses a long-standing challenge faced by the RAF of not having enough information to conduct thorough investigations when a claim is lodged.
