'I care deeply about making sure our high streets remain fantastic places for families to come and shop and spend time'
During a visit to Nottinghamshire the Prime Minister reflected on his first year in office and shared his plans for the future, including support for the high streets. Rishi Sunak toured the Currys' Repair Centre in Coddington, near Newark on Trent, on Monday, October 9, where he met members of staff and spoke about his goals for the country.
"Debt is falling as we wanted it to which is good for the financial security for the country's future, and when it comes to waiting lists, obviously things are tough with the strikes but we have seen improvements with the longest waiters having been eliminated, huge improvement in ambulance and A&E waiting times, we are hiring more doctors and nurses than ever before. When it comes to the boats and tackling illegal migration for the first time ever the numbers are down.
Regarding what he plans to do next, the Prime Minister shared his reasoning for stopping the northern leg of HS2, and explained how that money instead could be used on better things. Regarding town centres, he stated: "I care deeply about making sure our high streets remain fantastic places for families to come and shop and spend time, actually it's something that Robert cares about, Caroline cares about and Ben cares about.
He added: "Also planning reforms, to make it easier for us to change what shops are being used for on a high street as shopping habits evolve, just to maintain the vibrancy of the high street." Sunak also spoke about Net Zero and stopping young people from smoking, he explained: "Of course, we believe in Net Zero and of course, we are going to deliver it, but we've got to do that in a more proportionate, pragmatic way that recognises the cost of all of you on your families.
