Coulombe started the store in Pasadena, California, in 1967 and was renowned for the low prices of its international food range.

Coulombe sold Trader Joe's to the German grocery retailer Aldi in 1979 but stayed on as its chief executive until 1988, before leaving to work as a consultant for other large companies in transition before retiring in 2013.
