Coulombe started the store in Pasadena, California, in 1967 and was renowned for the low prices of its international food range.
Coulombe sold Trader Joe's to the German grocery retailer Aldi in 1979 but stayed on as its chief executive until 1988, before leaving to work as a consultant for other large companies in transition before retiring in 2013.
Annual salary increases of up to 10 percent also ensured he had a loyal staff, the Associated Press reported.This largesse extended was a theme of messages posted on Twitter on Saturday, as RIP Trader Joe started trending, with one writing,"My cashier told me that his coworker had to get brain surgery and got a $2 million medical bill and paid NOTHING bc of the coverage TJ gave their employees.
