Review: With whimsy and magic, Countries Shaped like Stars lights up the stage yyc
It’s a love story as sweet and winsome as it is tragic and unforeseen and it works so well at Lunchbox because it has been given a production that may seem simple but really isn’t.
Di Gaetano has written eight ditties with titles like Ode to Bartholomew, Seed Song, Party Song and When Something Goes Terribly Wrong that help tell the lovers’ story. Dalgleish and Thomas, who are both accomplished musicians, sing acapella or accompany themselves with guitar, mandolin, spoons, whirly-winds and, at one point, Thomas creates a xylophone using water glasses. It’s just another way of creating magic in front of the audience.
If there is a flaw it’s that Countries Shaped Like Stars is storytelling with only brief moments when Dalgleish and Thomas become Bartholomew and Gwendolyn. That means the audience doesn’t have time to invest as much as it should in their tragedy.
