Even if the NHL’s best players say they want to go to the Olympics, no one in the league will listen to them. That is why the NHL will not be part of the Olympics anymore
It sort of came and went in the space of a single news cycle, but last week Connor McDavid gave a crucial insight into the hockey mindset.
On the other hand, what is McDavid talking about? Who is the ‘we’ in this comment? The players? The NHLPA? Is it the royal ‘we’ of hockey writ large? If enough hockey players who matter say it, Canada will demand it. If Canada demands it, the NHL will eventually have to agree to it. If I ran a successful business and my top employee was going on about how she hasn’t got the one thing she really wants, that would concern me. I would wonder if her colleagues felt the same way. I might be worried that I was letting an easy HR win slide. Especially if my alternative to their alternative is an ongoing embarrassment.
‘As soon as the casualty list becomes manageable’ does not strike me as a great business plan, but here we are. But you don’t hear the NBA talking about starting its own rinky-dink international tournament that no one wants. Why? Because the players would laugh at it. It would be a revolt. Luka Doncic is not going to take a walk on the Slovenian national team because someone up at HQ told him, ‘Yeah, we got your request and we know what you’re saying, but it’s just not going to happen this fiscal.’
