The last and only time South Africa hosted a World Cup was in 1995, when the Springboks went on a fairytale run to clinch the Webb Ellis Cup on home soil, a just one year into its hard-fought democracy. And following the team’s back-to-back success in 2019 and 2023, there has been widespread calls from the public for SA Rugby and the government to do everything in its power to bring the showpiece event back to South Africa at least one more time., SA Rugby has been discouraged from putting in a bid for the hosting rights due to both the cost of the required guarantee, as well as their previous experience with the unjust bidding process involving the 2023 Rugby World Cup tournament.
The next two Rugby World Cup tournaments in 2027 and 2031 will be hosted in Australia and the United States respectively.Steeped in history and tradition, the Currie Cup dates back to 1891 and remains the most prestigious prize in South African domestic rugby.
