The statue of Sir John A. Macdonald that was removed from City Park last year will not be going to his graveside in Cataraqui Cemetery.

At a recent meeting, the board of the cemetery voted to no longer support a plan to have the statue erected at the national historic site.

As recently as May, councillors were told in a report that consultations between the cemetery board, First Nations and Parks Canada were continuing.Article content Meadowbrook-Strathcona Dist. Coun. Jeff McLaren, the only city councillor who voted against the statue’s removal, reiterated his opinion that the statue should be put back up somewhere as part of a broader, more inclusive story about Macdonald’s legacy.
