- ROME, OCT 10 - Of the 500 million euro made available to Italian regions to reduce hospital waiting lists in 2022, only 69.6% have been used, Health Minister Orazio Schillaci said on Tuesday.

"There are 160 million euro left over," he told the national congress of the Sumai Assoprof medical union. "The most recent analyses confirm this trend, with significant differences between regions that have spent more than 100% and others that have used only 30% of the allocation to cut waiting lists," Schillaci added.

The minister said very often the problem lies in the"lack of physician time that could have been obtained by resorting to outpatient specialists". Premier Giorgia Meloni has repeated on several occasions her government's commitment to bringing down national-health-system waiting lists, and on Saturday sources in the majority said it also aimed to increase the funds earmarked for healthcare in the 2024 budget law. .
