The Odlum Brown VanOpen has more than one special spot in Rebecca Marino’s heart.
She was a fan first. Marino, who’s from Vancouver, remembers watching Maria Sharapova win the inaugural VanOpen in 2002 at the Jericho Tennis Club. Marino was just 11.
The VanOpen also helped Marino find the sport again. She had made it all the way to No. 38 in the world rankings at one point. Marino quit the tour in February 2013, citing depression issues. She was 22 at the time and didn’t offer any hint at a possible return. Marino, who had been going to UBC and was on their rowing team, returned to the tennis tour the following year, won her first tournament back in Turkey and has been winning on the regular tour since then.
The 31-year-old is scheduled to meet American Emma Navarro, 21, in the first round on Tuesday. Navarro, who’s from New York, is ranked No. 166. She was the 2021 NCAA champion as a freshman at Virginia. She announced in June that she was leaving school to turn pro.
