One tenant pulls burning flashing off awning while another helps child in burning B.C. Housing suite

According to Craig Soles — a longtime tenant in the three-level B.C. Housing-operated apartment complex on the 1400-block of Comox Street — at around 7:40 p.m. he opened a bedroom window in his ground-floor apartment to the smell of smoke.

“Shortly after that we heard an explosion, I looked out the window and could see flame coming out of the windows of the apartment,” Soles said.“The burning flashing came down on top of the awning below and that caught fire and then I started to pull it off. I thought this was going to spread quick.” Soles said. “A few minutes later the firefighters had the water on it.”

According to Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services, firefighters were called to the fire at 7:45 p.m. and responded quickly with several trucks and 29 firefighters. They were able to quickly extinguish the blaze and then evacuated several seniors in the building with mobility issues.Article content The occupants of one suite on the ground floor below the burnt-out apartment have been displaced, but the rest of the suites were unaffected.

Soles said that he had complained several times to B.C. Housing over the past few years about tenants in the non-smoking building who smoke on the decks and inside their suites. He said there were spray cans being stored under the awning that had caught fire.Saturday night’s fire comes after a Downtown Eastside building was destroyed by fire on Wednesday night and exactly one month after a firefighter was hurt during an apartment fire on Comox Street, at the intersection with Thurlow Street.
