Taking a penchant for building beautiful things that last, 75\u002Dyear\u002Dold self taught artist Procter has an indoor exhibit.
Driving down West 12th Avenue toward Maple, you won’t miss the art in the yard. Jack Procter’s furniture, mobiles and paintings explode with bright colours, distinctive designs and a serving of whimsy. For many years now he has sold work from the curbside in front of his Kitsilano basement suite. Now his work is getting a proper exhibition with a new show titled Into the Unknown at the Pendulum Gallery.
After a life spent working as everything from a computer programmer and landscaper to dishwashing at the Keg on Granville Island, Procter always kept pursuing art. When finances were stretched he hit upon sourcing materials from items discarded in alleys, on sale at thrift shops and more. Taking ideas from his lifelong interest in plants and nature, his work is impressionistic and full of movement. A quirky representation of a bird can also become a leaf fallen from a tree.
Q: Looking at your custom tables and other art/furniture, it’s possible to see that you repurpose objects. How do you source materials?I both forage and purchase various objects with the intention of reimagining them in different ways. So you can have a piece with a single table leg, a candle-holder and salvaged wood become an artwork and side table by applying epoxy, enamel and so forth. The construction happens on its own, becoming something along the way.creamofthestream.
