Funding for Halifax Transit to recover from low pandemic-related ridership has some interesting housing-related stings attached.

The federal and provincial governments are offering over $8.6 million in COVID-19 recovery funding for Halifax Transit, but it comes with some housing-related catches.A cheque for over $8.6 million for transit has some interesting strings attached.

The federal and provincial government are offering $8,655,876 in one-time funding to help Halifax Transit recover from low ridership through the pandemic. On Tuesday, Halifax regional council will vote on accepting the money along with the terms and conditions, most of which relate to the housing crisis., the terms and conditions state that the funding must go toward “transit capital or operating shortfalls or housing.

HRM must also commit to work in collaboration to “address barriers to increasing housing supply and density.” Masland stated the province would like further progress on:enabling and supporting construction of new housing and more density in proximity to new public transit project;speeding up approval processes through innovative tools such as digital permitting systems.

In the report, staff said they’re running a deficit of over $7.4 million and this funding would wipe that out.Ridership is rebuilding but it is still below pre-pandemic levels, according to the staff report, and there is a driver shortage that is“The COVID-19 pandemic has severely hindered how Halifax Transit has been able to operate,” staff wrote in a report in advance of Tuesday’s meeting.
