Plans to determine an annual cap on the number of refugees accepted in the UK will be put to local authorities for consultation, the Home Office has said.Councils will be invited to set out their capacity to accommodate people coming to the UK via safe and legal routes, 'with a view to the UK taking only as many refugees as local communities can support', the government said.
The cap, which the government hopes to have agreed in parliament before launching in January 2025, would be subject to change each year and take into consideration capacity in local areas, for example in response to a humanitarian crisis, according to the Home Office.Immigration minister Robert Jenrick said: 'The unacceptable number of people making illegal, dangerous and wholly unnecessary small boat crossings is placing an immense strain on housing and services across the UK.
