Police search for Qumbu taxi passenger who shot taxi driver and another passenger
Police are searching for an unidentified taxi passenger who shot a taxi driver and one other passenger in Qumbu, Eastern Cape, on Wednesday evening.
The unidentified person, who was wearing traditional apparel, posed as a passenger in a local taxi and then shot the taxi driver while he was counting his change at the Sithangameni stop. “At the stop, the driver was busy counting his change when the suspect suddenly drew a firearm and shot both the driver and the passenger to death,” said Eastern Cape SA Police Service spokesperson Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana.Kinana added that the circumstances which surround the shooting incident were currently under investigation.
“The Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit is investigating two cases of murder which occurred on Wednesday evening January 4 at about 6.30pm at Sithangameni, in Qumbu.” The police are asking anyone with additional information that could lead to an arrest to please contact the Sulenkama or Qumbu police stations or call the Crime Stop number 08 600 10111. According to SAPS crime statistics, police recorded 242 murders that were committed in a mode of transport, including buses and taxis, while 227 people were killed in liquor outlets between April and June.In times of uncertainty you need journalism you can trust.
