Police launch Operation Cold Start to curb thefts of vehicles left running unattended yyc
Between Nov. 1, 2022, and Jan. 25, 246 vehicles across the city were stolen while left running unattended. “It definitely is a crime of opportunity, and I tell folks all the time that it’s 100 per cent preventable,” he said.Article content “It happens all over . It’s wrong place at the wrong time . . . And you just never know who’s going to be in that area that’s either looking for a ride home because it’s a free vehicle or, unfortunately, we do have those thieves that are actually looking for that vehicle to use in future crimes.
“The most concerning thing about that is it’s not just that the keys are left and even locked, but finding a vehicle where the vehicle is unlocked and people are leaving their personal belongings,” Terry said. “People always think, ‘well, what are the chances it’s going to happen to me?’ But it only takes seconds for someone to jump in that vehicle and drive away.”403-266-1234 or call 911 if they witness a crime in progress.
