Passengers arriving at the Marlboro Gautrain station have had to be sneaked out through another exit as Alexandra resident protests over services in the township AlexTotalShutdown
“We’ve been complaining to Pikitup about the collection of waste in our area and nothing has happened. Look our around. They have turned our place into a scrap yard. There people who come from nowhere and build under pylons. The last time a pylon fell and burnt a number of shacks. They came and rebuild the shacks and people are back.”
Mthombeni said Alexandra had become a really unsafe area for the residents. Drugs, she added, were had become a huge problem and house breaking were on the rise. She said residents marched six weeks ago to the Region E offices in Sandton where the submitted a memorandum of demands about their complaints.
Police are currently negotiating with representatives of the residents in an effort to clear the road which has not been closed. The residents have already promised the police that they will not be violent but demand that director at the Region E office of the city comes and address them. While negotiations continued, SAPS, supported by the JMPD, formed a line on the road ready with rubber bullet while the community members stood up the road singing struggle songs.
