ANTHONY, N.L. — The provincial Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture is advising residents of reports of polar bear sightings in and around St. Anthony, Port Hope Simpson, St. Lewis and Black Tickle.
The forestry officials advised residents to keep pets inside or under close supervision, travel in groups when outdoors if possible and never approach a fresh kill or carcass. Forestry officials said that if a bear smells a person, remain calm, give the bear space and a route to get away and back away but do not run. If people need to speak, do so calmly and firmly and avoid eye contact.
