Poet and academic Alexander Scott and his regiment came under fire at the D-Day landings in Normandy in June 1944. According to the Scottish Poetry Library: “Writing to Alan Bold in 1979, Scott recalled that ‘of all the 15 subalterns in our battalion who landed in Normandy on D-Day, I was the only one still there in Germany on VE-Day 11 months later.”

Scott also led his squadron in Operation Veritable, a bigger battle than even that of El Alamein, in which “he looked after his men and exposed himself to danger first.” The department is the home of the renowned Centre for Robert Burns Studies, a leading research centre dedicated to Scotland’s national poet, and the Association for Scottish Literature, which has been instrumental in raising the profile of the subject.
