The airplane, which is upside down on a ledge, is in remarkably good condition.

One of the divers reaching the wreck of the RCAF B-24 in Gander Lake. - Maxwel HohnA story that started in 1943 came one step closer to ending on Monday, Sept. 5, when a team of divers dove into Gander Lake, looking for what they believed was a Liberator Bomber that crashed into the lake shortly after taking off 79 years ago, claiming the lives of four airmen.

The exact location of the wreck was discovered by a sonar survey in July, when SPSNL board member Kirk Regular was out on the lake on a contract for a local mining company and asked if he could use the equipment to check the area where the bomber had gone down. Burgess said the water in Gander Lake is dark, almost like tea, and without the sonar it would have been very difficult, almost impossible, to find the bomber.

“It’s their property, and it’s a war grave, so we wouldn’t disturb that without permission,” Burgess said. “This is important local history for Canada and for Newfoundland and the RCAF, so we’d like to follow up with the air force and see what they want to do.” Jill Heinerth, explorer in residence with the Royal Canadian Geographical Society, is a part of that team and said when the opportunity presented itself, the team was eager to take part.
