Conservatives allege prescribed “safe supplies” of opioids are being diverted to the black market, and demand the money be spent on addictions treatment instead.

OTTAWA — Cries of “shame” echoed around Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre on the floor of the House of Commons on Tuesday as an intense and emotional debate erupted about Canada’s toxic drug crisis.

In response, Addictions Minister Carolyn Bennett soon had her fellow Liberals on their feet and cheering. Illegal sources of opioids are increasingly tainted with deadly toxins. Advocates of the safe supply approach argue that the need to keep people who use opioids away from the toxic supply is urgent.

Tuesday’s exchange in the House was prompted by recent reports from British Columbia about whether prescribed opioids are making their way to the black market. When asked for the source of his claims, Poilievre’s office pointed to a recent report out of Nanaimo, B.C. that showed prescription labels ripped off containers of opioids that may have then been sold.

“Participants reported reduced use of illicit drugs, decreased overdose risk, financial improvements and improvements to health and well-being,” the study concluded.
